EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Experts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
